Common reasons a garage door won't close in Houston - sensors, tracks, and springs - plus what you can safely check yourself.
Few things are more frustrating than a garage door that lifts fine but refuses to close - or reverses right back up the moment it touches down. Before you assume the worst, here are the usual culprits Houston homeowners run into, and which ones you can safely check yourself.
The two small photo-eye sensors near the bottom of your tracks are the number-one reason a door won't close. If they are knocked out of alignment, blocked by a bin or cobweb, or their lenses are dirty, the door assumes something is in the way and reverses. Wipe the lenses gently, clear any obstruction, and make sure both sensors point straight at each other. A steady light on each usually means they are aligned.
Leaves, dirt, or a small object lodged in the track can stop the door. Houston's storms blow plenty of debris into open garages. Inspect the tracks for anything obvious - but do not force the door.
If the door slams down fast, feels extremely heavy, or you hear a loud bang followed by a door that won't move, a spring or lift cable has likely failed. This is not a DIY fix - the components are under high tension and dangerous to handle.
Openers have travel limits that tell the door how far to move. If the close limit is set wrong, the door may stop short or reverse. This adjustment exists on most openers but is easy to get wrong, so proceed carefully or leave it to a tech.
Gulf Coast moisture corrodes rollers, hinges, and cables over time. A rusty, binding roller can cause the door to catch and reverse. Regular lubrication helps, but badly worn hardware needs replacement.
If the simple checks above do not solve it, the issue is likely mechanical. Our Houston opener repair service can diagnose sensor, logic-board, and travel-limit problems the same day.
