Short answer: a garage door lift cable is a wear part that almost never fails on its own. By the time one snaps, frays, or jumps off its drum, something else on the door has usually been quietly wrong for months — a corroded bottom bracket, a drum that has slipped on the shaft, a spring that is no longer carrying the door, or a floor that is out of level. Replacing the cable without finding that cause buys you a few months, not a repair.
What follows is the part of this job most cable pages skip: how to tell which of your door’s cables actually failed, the five things that break them in Houston specifically, why the second cable comes off even when it looks fine, and what a correct cable repair includes beyond the cable itself. People say “the cable broke” as though a garage door has one. Most have two lift cables, and some have two more safety cables on top of that. They fail differently, they are dangerous in different ways, and the repair is not the same, so it is worth two minutes to work out which one you are looking at.
Lift cables. These are the working cables. On a torsion-spring door — the kind with a shaft and one or two springs mounted on the wall above the opening — a lift cable runs from a bottom bracket at each side of the lowest panel, straight up the side of the door, and wraps onto a grooved drum at each end of the torsion shaft. When the springs unwind, the drums turn, the cables wind on, and the door is pulled up. On an extension-spring door — springs running horizontally along the tracks on each side, no shaft above the opening — the lift cable runs from the same bottom bracket, up and over a pulley, back along the horizontal track, and anchors near the spring. Different geometry, same job: the cable is what physically connects the counterbalance to the door.
Safety cables. These exist only on extension-spring doors, and only if somebody fitted them. A safety cable runs loosely straight through the middle of the extension spring and is anchored at both ends. It carries no load at all in normal use. Its entire purpose is that if the spring snaps, the two halves stay threaded on the cable instead of leaving the wall at speed. If you have extension springs and no safety cables, that is worth fixing whether or not your lift cable has failed — it is the cheapest safety improvement available on a garage door.
Two practical consequences. First, a snapped safety cable is not why your door will not open, because it was never lifting anything; look at the lift cable instead. Second, if you have extension springs, the cable question and the spring question are the same conversation, which is why we usually quote them together rather than pretending they are separate visits. Stand inside the garage with the door closed and the light on, and pull the red release cord so the opener is disconnected. Do not lift the door and do not press the wall button. You are only looking. Almost every cable call is one of these five pictures.
Two things to note down while you are there, because they change the quote more than anything else you can tell us: whether the springs above the opening are intact, and whether the door has been run since the cable failed. A door that was operated three or four times after a cable came off usually needs more than a cable.
Cable failure is not random. In this market it is nearly always one of five causes, and they show up in a fairly consistent order.
1. Corrosion at the bottom of the cable. The bottom eighteen inches of a lift cable sits closest to the slab, and a Houston garage is a humid place year-round. Add a floor that gets wet — a car dripping after a storm, a slab that sweats in August, a garage that has ever taken water — and the strands at the bottom fixture rust from the inside out. What you see is a cable that looks slightly darker and slightly furry near the bottom bracket while the rest of it looks new. The cable does not fail where it is stressed most; it fails where the moisture sat. This is why we always look at the bottom foot of both cables first, and why a cable that lasted twenty years in a dry climate can be finished in eight here.
2. A door that was run on a broken spring. When a torsion spring breaks, the counterbalance disappears and the full weight of the door — well over a hundred pounds on most sectional doors, considerably more on a two-car insulated door — lands on two thin cables and an opener that was never designed to lift it. If someone keeps pressing the button, the cables take a load they were not sized for, the drums scuff, and the cable either snaps or jumps its groove. A large share of the cable jobs we attend are really spring jobs that were operated for a week first.
3. A drum set screw that has crept loose. Each drum is clamped to the torsion shaft by set screws. Over thousands of cycles, and especially on a door with any imbalance, one can back off. The drum then slips slightly on the shaft on every cycle, the two sides fall out of sync, one cable goes slack at the top of travel, and slack cable is what jumps a groove. The tell is a door that has begun to travel very slightly crooked or to shudder at one point in its run, weeks before anything actually fails.
4. An out-of-level floor or a settled slab. If the slab under the opening is not level — and after a few Gulf Coast seasons of wet and dry clay, a surprising number are not — the door lands on one side first. The cable on the other side goes slack for a moment on every single close, then snatches tight on the way up. Thousands of repetitions of that is a cable that unwinds off its drum eventually. This is the cause people almost never guess, and it is why a cable that is replaced without addressing the down-force setting or the floor comes off again.
5. Opener force settings set too high. An opener with its down-force turned up will happily drive the door into the floor and keep pushing, which lets both cables unspool off their drums. Homeowners often raise that setting deliberately, because the door had begun reversing on the way down and turning the force up made the symptom go away. It made the symptom go away by overpowering whatever was causing the resistance. If your opener was recently adjusted and now the cables are loose, those two facts are related.
Salt air matters too if you are closer to the bay side of the metro. It is a slower version of cause one, and it shows up as general dulling and pitting along the whole cable rather than concentrated rust at the bottom.
A lift cable is stranded steel wire wound into a rope, and it does not go from sound to snapped in one step. It passes through four recognisable stages, and every one of them is visible from the floor with a torch. Knowing them is the difference between booking a cable and paying for whatever a snapped cable took with it.
Stage one: dulling and discolouration. The cable loses its bright finish over a stretch, usually in the bottom foot or wherever it passes a pulley. Nothing is broken. In a dry garage this can sit like that for years; in a humid Houston garage it is the start of the clock, because dulling is oxidation and oxidation is happening inside the rope as well as on the outside.
Stage two: a fuzzy or furry look. Run a torch along the cable and it no longer looks like smooth rope — there is a hairy texture. Those are individual wire strands that have already broken and sprung out of the lay. At this stage the cable has lost real strength and it will not recover. This is the ideal moment to replace, and it is the stage most people walk past every day without registering.
Stage three: visible broken strands and a change in diameter. You can see specific wires standing off the cable, often in a cluster, and sometimes the rope looks thinner just above or below the damage where it has started to unwind. A cable in this state can fail on the next cycle or survive another month, and there is no way to tell which. Do not gamble on a door that is over a car.
Stage four: kinking, birdcaging, or a flattened section. A kink is a permanent bend that will not straighten; birdcaging is where the strands bulge outward into a lantern shape, usually after a shock load; a flattened section means the cable has been crushed between the drum and something else. All three mean the cable has been overloaded rather than just worn, and all three are a reason to look hard at why before fitting a new one.
Worth adding: check the same four stages on the cable that has not failed. It is the most useful ninety seconds you can spend, because it tells you whether you are looking at one worn-out part or at a door where both cables are finished.
Gulf Coast weather reaches garage door cables in three separate ways, and they are worth separating because the remedies differ.
Humidity, year round. This is the slow one and the one that matters most. An unconditioned Houston garage spends months at high humidity, and steel cable holds moisture in the gaps between its strands. Corrosion therefore starts on the inside of the rope, where you cannot see it, and only later shows on the surface as dulling. It is the reason a cable can look acceptable and still be well down on strength, and the reason we judge cables on their bottom foot rather than their overall appearance.
Standing water, occasionally. A garage that has taken water — from a street flood, a storm surge, or simply a hard rain with a slab that drains inward — submerges exactly the parts that matter: the bottom brackets, the lower cable ends, the bottom section of the door, and the fixings that hold all of it together. Water damage to a door is usually diagnosed months later as a cable failure. If your garage has flooded at any point, tell us, because it moves the bottom brackets and the bottom panel from “inspect” to “expect to find something”.
Wind and debris, rarely but violently. A storm-loaded door flexes far more than a door in normal use, and the load path for that flex runs through the tracks, the rollers, and the cables. A door that took a hard storm and afterwards runs slightly differently has usually moved something. On a wind-rated door this matters more, not less, because the bracing and the heavier section weight put more tension into the same cables — and a wind-rated door that has had its hardware quietly compromised is no longer rated for anything. The practical takeaway for anyone in this metro: get the bottom foot of both cables and both bottom brackets looked at once a year, and specifically after any event that put water on your garage floor. That single check is what keeps cable work in the cheap category.
When one cable fails, the other one is the same age, has done the same number of cycles, has sat in the same humidity, and is attached to a bracket that has taken the same abuse. It is not a coincidentally healthy part that happens to be nearby; it is the same part with the same history that has not got round to failing yet.
There is also a mechanical reason that has nothing to do with wear. Lift cables have to be the same effective length within a very small tolerance, because the door is only level if both drums wind the same amount of cable. A new cable and an old cable have different amounts of stretch and constructional set in them. Fit one new cable next to one that has been in service ten years and the door will run very slightly out of level from the day you leave — which is cause four again, one side landing first, slack on every cycle, and a repeat visit.
So the honest position is this: replacing one cable is cheaper on the invoice and more expensive over two years. We will fit a single cable if a customer specifically wants that and the other one genuinely inspects clean, but we will say on the paperwork that the door is now running on mismatched cables, because that is what it is.
The cable is an inexpensive component. Most of the value in a correct cable repair is in the things around it, and a quote that is only for cable is usually a quote that is not going to fix the door.
Drums. A cable that has jumped a groove and then been run under load leaves score marks on the drum, and a scored drum shreds the next cable. Drums also come in sizes matched to door height; a door with a high lift or an unusual track configuration needs a drum that suits it. We inspect both drums with the cable off, and if the grooves are damaged, saying so is not optional.
Bottom brackets and fixtures. This is where the cable anchors to the door, and it is where corrosion and impact damage concentrate. A bracket with elongated holes or a cracked weld will not hold a new cable. On a door where the bottom section is also rotten or delaminated — common on older wooden doors and on any door that has taken standing water — the bracket has nothing sound to bolt to, and the repair becomes a panel replacement whether anybody wanted it to or not.
Re-tensioning and re-balancing. With cables off, the spring tension has to be released and reset. That is the part of the job that requires winding bars and experience, and it is the reason cable replacement is not a homeowner repair even though the cable itself costs very little. Set the tension wrong and the door either fights the opener on the way up or drifts closed on its own.
Setting the opener limits and forces afterwards. New cables slightly change where the door sits at full close. If the opener limits are not reset, the door either stops short or keeps driving after the door lands, which unspools the new cables and starts the whole thing again. A cable repair that ends without touching the opener settings is unfinished.
The sequence matters, so here it is in the order we run it.
If you take one safety point from this page, take this one. The bottom brackets at the two lower corners of your door are under the full spring tension transmitted through the cables, all the time, whether the door is open or closed. They are not like other brackets on the door.
Undoing the bolts on a bottom bracket while the cables are still tensioned releases that force instantly and violently. It is the specific action that causes the serious injuries associated with garage doors, and it looks completely innocuous — two bolts, a socket, thirty seconds. It is also the exact repair a homeowner is most likely to attempt after a cable comes off, because the bracket is the visible thing the cable is attached to and it is right there at floor level.
Everything else on a door can be examined safely. Bottom brackets, torsion springs and the winding cones stay untouched until the tension is off. If you have already loosened a bottom bracket and the door is still under tension, stop, leave the door alone, keep people away from it, and tell us that when you call — it changes how we approach the door on arrival.

Three situations come up often enough to be worth naming, because in each one replacing the cable alone would be a wasted visit.
The door reverses or will not close, and someone noticed a slack cable. Slack cable is a consequence here, not a cause. Something stopped the door on the way down, the opener kept driving, and the cables unspooled. The real question is what the door hit or why the photo eyes triggered. The door is noisy and shakes, and a cable looks like it is vibrating. Usually rollers, not cables. Worn rollers let the door move laterally in the track, which makes everything attached to it look unstable. Roller replacement is the fix, and it is a much smaller job.
Cables have come off twice in a year. A repeat is a message. It means the underlying cause — a slipping drum, an out-of-level floor, an opener force setting, an undersized spring — was never addressed. If your door is on its second or third cable in a short period, tell us that when you call. It changes what we measure on arrival, and it is the difference between fixing the door and renting you a cable subscription.
Can I still use the door until you get here? No, and this is the one place we are firm about it. A door with one failed cable is loaded unevenly and is the situation most likely to drop or jam badly. Park outside, leave the door where it is, and use the walk-through door.
Can I open it manually just once to get the car out? If the springs are intact and the door is level, a door can usually be opened by hand after pulling the release — but a door with a failed cable is not level, and forcing a diagonal door up the track is how bottom sections get destroyed. If you genuinely need the vehicle, say so when you call and we will tell you whether it is safe with your particular symptom rather than guessing here.
How long does the repair take? A straightforward two-cable replacement on a healthy door is not a long job. What extends it is everything found around the cable — a scored drum, a bent shaft, a damaged bottom section, a broken spring underneath it all.
How long should new cables last? Longer than the last set did, if the cause was found. That is a real answer rather than a dodge: cables in a dry garage on a balanced door outlast most other parts on the door, while cables on a door with a slipping drum can fail within a season. The lifespan is set by the fault, not by the cable.
Do I need new springs at the same time? Not automatically. If the springs are intact, correctly sized and within their cycle life, we leave them. Is there anything I can do to make cables last longer? Yes, and it is unglamorous: keep the bottom of the door and the bottom brackets dry, do not raise the opener force to mask a symptom, and have the door balanced periodically.
